Quote for the Weekend

“Men are like logs in a fire, lots of heat and a warming glow, but soon they are a pale ash heap of what they once were…”

A truer statement has never been uttered by King, Prince or pauper. In all my live long days upon the mighty Mississippi I have never heard such wisdom before, I wish that I had said it.

This Ledger D’Main fellow must be one where the whiskey flows freely from his veins…

He’s a criminally wise old bird, I’ll give him that, and since the cold climes in which he reigns are a frozen tundra for ten months out of the year, only scotch or anti-freeze can save his immortal soul. They’ve learned to like the taste of anti-freeze there so much though, the whole state has been sucked dry and no one will sell to them any more. Ledger quietly and cleverly invented the intravenous consumption of whiskey and saved the state from ruin. I even heard their overall consumption, and D’Main’s consumption in particular, through this fall and winter may be the saving of our country’s whole economy! I think it’s just marvelous the way he always puts the welfare of others first. Wise, brave and selfless — what an American hero. I just love him!

Reminds me of TS Eliot’s “The Hollow Men.”

Is this a guy thing, this empty, burned out, hollow feeling? Is it mid-age crisis related? I don’t hear women talk about/like this, but I do hear and read a lot of men say they feel sucked dry by life.
