Get Your Local Media to Do a Report on SBS

18 Jan

Here is a sample letter used by Holly to get her local media involved.

This letter has received response from my local Channel 10 News! Please send it to the reporters and anchors in your area. It would also be good for talk shows and celebrities, anyone who could help spread the word to the public! Feel free to use this in part or in whole.

Hello. After reading what I have to say, I hope you will be willing to help save babies. I am a part of a large myspace.com group and a board member for the Kaleb Schwade Foundation. We are desperately working to bring awareness to Shaken Baby Syndrome. There is nothing more important than the safety of our children. If there is, please tell me what.Did you know that shaking a baby for as little as 3 seconds can cause blindness, severe brain damage or even death? Don’t think it can’t happen to someone you love. Each year an estimated 1200-3000 cases of Shaken Baby Syndrome occur. 27% of cases are caused by non-relatives and others, such as babysitters, aunts, uncles and even close family friends! They, like so many others, had no idea shaking a baby can cause such damage. Help us spread the word! You could save a life!
The problem with SBS is that it is widely unknown. 25-50% of parents are unaware of the risks of SBS. Does YOUR sitter know about SBS? We walk for premature babies, relay for cancer. Isn’t it time we brought awareness to the leading cause of death in child abuse cases?
September was shaken by her father. She is now 8 years old and cannot walk, speak or see. Alex was shaken by his mother’s boyfriend and he too is unable to walk, speak or see. McKynzee was beaten and shaken by her father and has cerebral palsy, epilepsy, hydrocephalus and a feeding tube, to name a few. She also cannot walk, speak, see or even hold her head up. Her abuser has yet to be prosecuted in the 4 years that have passed since the attack. Benjamin and Madi died from injuries sustained after being shaken by a babysitter. Cynthia and Mekenna died after being shaken by a close family friend. So many lives have been devastated and it can truly happen to anyone!Bill S. 1204 and Bill H.R. 2052 named The Shaken Baby Syndrome Act of 2007 was presented to Congress on April 25 & 26, 2007. To date, only 20 out of 535 members of Congress have signed on in support. We are looking for ways to help bring awareness to SBS.

Please consider helping to bring awareness to this issue! I am begging you! I have photos, stories and videos of these tiny victims available. We need someone like you to speak out! Before you say no, at least write to me and let me show you some of the photos and videos. If you can look at the tiny faces of these little, defenseless victims and still turn your head, feel free to tell me no. It will only take a moment of your time to check into it. I hope to hear back from you soon. Every day we wait puts more babies at risk.

Sincerely,

Holly David
