Totem Animal: Dolphin

18 Mar

A totem animal expresses the spirit of that animal and the qualities we can learn from it. They are psychological and spiritual symbols that help us to develop the skills and qualities that we are lacking or needing in our lives. Animal totems work with your subconscious, tapping into your share of universal energy. Try thinking of totem animals as different channels or frequencies that we can tune into as our needs change. We simply adjust the frequency of our share of universal energy to tap into the desired channel. However, the key to understanding how to do this is being aware and perceptive of your surroundings.

Having a totem animal does not mean that you worship the animal. Rather, you use the animal totem as a spiritual tool in symbiosis with the path you are already walking. Honor and respect for nature is paramount, as Man is not above nature but one with it. Totems, indeed all of nature, help to guide us on our journey of self-discovery by making us aware of our spiritual connectedness.

From Lin’s Domain:

The Power of Breath and Sound

Dolphin reminds us to listen more and talk less. Through listening to someone while they talk, you can “hear” the tones of the voice, not just the words. Also, listen when you are outdoors – listen to the heartbeat of Mother Earth, to the sound of the birds. Listen to the trees talking as a breeze rustles their leaves. Sound is creative life force. Learn from nature and Dolphin how to create inner sounds so that you can create outer manifestations. A Dolphin totem can show you how to enter the waters of life and then with breath and sound call forth what you most need or desire. Sounds are a part of dolphin life, and therefore, if you have this totem, they need to be a part of yours. Dolphins always seem to be smiling – take a clue from them and smile more often. Be more loving and kind towards people and they will return the same. Dolphins are also one of three sentient beings here on Earth (humans and Whales are the other two) and we are just now beginning to understand their complex language.

Whales and Dolphins are sentient beings, higher souls than animal souls but younger souls than human souls.

From Shamanic Journey:

Symbol of Breath of Life, Love, Balance and Community

Dolphin teaches us that when we live in tune with the patterns and rhythm of nature, we learn how to truly be in touch with, resonate and communicate with All That IS and how to share this sagacity with anyone interested. There are those that believe Dolphins are more intelligent than humans. Especially when it comes to love. They have large brains, superior intelligence and are often associated in mythical lore with higher forms of consciousness. Some believe they are far more evolved than we are, especially on a spiritual level. Some believe they are alien beings from a different dimension.

Dolphins are connected with the power of breath and with emotional release, which are also both deeply connected. One of the most important factors in spiritual growth is to give ourselves the freedom of full experiencing our feelings and emotions. Often negative emotions are suppressed as we don’t want to be a part of them, so we try to stay apart from them. Feelings of sadness, pain, anger, grief. We need to stop doing this, as this only lays the foundation for disagreeable outcomes. We need to feel our feelings, by suppressing these feelings, of course they DO NOT go away. They are still there, subconsciously, manifesting blocked energy with-in, and if these blocks aren’t removed, this can go on to physical imbalances, with-out. On top of this, by blocking these so-called negative feelings, this can result in losing the quality of being able to feel at all, losing much of life’s joy. Becoming dead to the world.

Simply stated breathing is conversing with the outside world. When people feel that the outside world is a source of pain, they learn, very frequently at a young age, to constrict their breathing. The diaphragm is built to assist us in breathing and to feel deeply, but it becomes suppressed. When we learn to breathe deeply we can learn to feel deeply, in turn letting go of stifled feelings. One way of doing this is to copy the dolphins pattern of breathing, a superb tension reliever!. Dolphin breathes deeply, holds his breath underwater, then breathes out forcefully. Living in water is an important characteristic of Dolphin, as in many belief systems, including astrology, water is related to feeling and emotion.

If Dolphin swims into your life, he is asking you to relish water both physically and mentally, swimming freely and going along with your natural feelings. He is showing you how to enter the waters of life and then with breath and sound call forth what you most need or desire. Dolphins use a variety of whistles, grunts, clicks, and body postures to communicate. They have unique, personal whistles they give out. If they want to get the attention of another Dolphin, they give out their personal whistle. Sound is the creative life force and a big part of dolphins life, therefore this needs to be a part of your life. Communicate. With those around you and All That Is. Creating inner sounds creates outer manifestations. If Dolphin is your power animal, you may do well using your voice for healing or communicating, whether incorporating this into a job or just as a hobby or in day-to-day life with those nearest and dearest to you..

Dolphins have a wise, innocent, purity of being which reaches out to our inner nature. Follow their lead and open yourself to the energy of love, harmony and balance. Express your inner truth, be true to yourself. follow your inner joy. Dolphin is asking you to go back to your roots, to the depths of your being and rediscover the Love that you truly are.

Dolphins spend most of their day playing. Their life is lived in joyful harmony with each other and their world. Apparently they have learned the lesson that love is the most important factor in life. If dolphin is your power animal he may be there to teach you how to love yourself and your world more. A big part of Dolphins medicine is living in balanced, harmonious communities. They live in big groups of up to 100. Females will give birth to a single offspring, with several dolphins around her, helping with the birth, pulling the newborn out by its tail. They then protect him or her from any imminent danger. If a dolphin is hurt or ill, other dolphins will tend to them, lifting them to the surface to breathe.

Dolphins Wisdom Includes – Knowledge of the sea, change, patron of sailors, harmony, wisdom, balance, Communication skills, freedom, trust, understanding the power of rhythm in your life, use of breath to release intense emotions, water element magic, unselfishness. Dolphin reminds us to get out, play and most importantly, to breathe.

From Power Animals Unleashed:

Joy, Clarity, Synchronicity

Ah, how fortunate you are to have the dolphin as your power animal.  Leap for joy!

The dolphin is so full of joy, he cannot help but leap into the air, just for the sheer pleasure of being alive.  Allow this vibrant life force to fill you, making you feel and know the privilege it is to be drawing one more breath in this precious life.  Let the dolphin teach you this deep abiding joy.

The dolphin is also a wonderful communicator.  He will teach you to listen to others and then to respond in a way which they will understand.  With the dolphin within you, words will flow more easily.  You will come into your own power as a communicator of both feelings and ideas, as his intelligence fills you with confidence in expressing yourself.

The dolphin is attuned to others, instinctively knowing just the right moment to leap into the air, so that the entire group moves in effortless harmony.  Let the dolphin teach you this intuitive synchronicity with others, moving at one with them and understanding what drives them and what moves them.

Love your life!  Leap for joy!  You are the dolphin.

From Animal Totem:

Dolphins are beautiful, playful animals. They live in water but are actually mammals that need to breathe air through a single nostril also known as a blowhole located on top of their head. Normally dolphins surface approximately every two minutes for air, but are capable of holding their breath for several minutes when making rapid deep dives.

Dolphin comes when we need to break emotional barriers and communicate truth. Dolphin will then guide us to find harmony by moving forward with our life.

If you want to make a deeper connection with your Animal Totem, fill your environment with images of the animal to let the animal know it is welcome in your space.

From The Mystic Hearth:

Playfulness * Compassion * Joy * Universal Wisdom * Distinctive * Magick of Water and Air * Accessing Hidden Realms * Healing Through Sound * Breath * Freedom

For anyone who has been privileged enough to witness one of these wise Creature Beings up close, there is no disputing the look of sheer intelligence, coupled with compassion, that shines forth from their eyes. When you have looked into the eyes of a Dolphin, and they gaze back into your own, you’re left with the sense that these are Animal Spirit Guides that transcend all interspecies barriers, possessing a knowledge and understanding that far exceeds our own.

These amazing ocean dwelling mammals, have been revered across centuries and amongst multiple civilizations, who recognized that there is something truly sacred and unique about them. And while their origins and myths vary from each of these ancient civilizations and ideologies, the common binding thread amongst all of those myths and beliefs, has been that of compassion.

Those blessed to have Dolphin swim beside them as a Primary Animal Totem Spirit Guide, will have inherited the Medicine of Wisdom and Compassion. As they journey through their life, these two-leggeds will be drawn to professions in which they may most effectively assist others. Some of the most amazing healers have this Creature Being as a dominant Spirit Guide, whether they choose the traditional fields of the healing arts (doctors, nurses, psychiatrists), or are instead inclined to effect healing through mystical and metaphysical practice (working with energy, crystals, flower essences, etc.).

Perhaps the greatest challenge for those whom Dolphin has chosen to journey beside, is in learning how to protect themselves against exhausting their beautiful inner resources. They will tend to give so freely and completely of themselves, that they run the risk of burning themselves out. Thus, the Dolphin soul would be wise to learn how to guard against this, which may include learning when to say “no” to a cry for help.

The young Dolphin will be a child that will possess a wide-eyed innocence and aura of incorruptibility. They will seem wiser beyond their years, and will have a compassionate and empathetic heart that will incline them toward reaching out to the underdogs of society and their outcast peers.

Parents of the young Dolphin would be wise to teach their child early on, how to protect themselves from giving too much away. As, if these offspring are not closely watched for signs of emotional or psychic depletion, serious lung or breathing difficulties may surface, such as chronic bronchitis or asthma.

Yet when well-developed, nurtured, and guided by parents and adults who play prominent roles in the young dolphin calf’s life, these youngsters will be wonderfully vivacious and engaging. While they will still give generously of themselves, they will have learned, through the guidance and counsel of their elders, how to protect themselves against exhaustion, or those that would misuse their loving nature.

Guardians of the Dolphin Calf are encouraged to assist this youngster’s natural interest in metaphysical and spiritual topics with an open mind. By encouraging their desire to explore the vast ocean of cosmic wisdom, with a careful eye on not exposing them too quickly to concepts beyond the physiological ability of their developing brains to grasp, the Guardian is playing an integral and essential role in the life of a soul that will one day become an accomplished healer or mystical guide.

There are few Creature Beings of Nature that are so closely linked to a variety of spiritual and mystical beliefs than that of these amazing Animal Totem Spirit Guides. The Dolphin has been connected to the Christian faith as a symbol of the Christ, to the ancient Romans and Greeks who associated them as both companion to various Deities, as well as to being the shapeshifted form of those Deities, and to the Celts and other civilizations who viewed these wondrous Animal Allies as either messengers from the Gods, or the transformed inhabitants of the lost civilizations of Atlantis and Lemuria.

This Animal Totem is often seen beside those who will be inexorably drawn to delving into a broad range of spiritual and metaphysical knowledge. They will thirstily drink up any information they come across that relates to Cosmic Wisdom, and will study these paths throughout their lives, understanding that the true Master is never finished with being the ever learning Student.

When Animal Spirit Guide Dolphin journeys beside a human counterpart, they will bring with them the Medicine of Joy and Playfulness. These souls make for spontaneous partners, prone to engaging their friends, family, and loved ones in a variety of fun and play.

But not all of the Dolphin interactions are so light and breezy, for they are individuals that feel very deeply. Herein lies the apparent contradiction, for while they can be quite lighthearted, they are also prone to periods of quiet withdrawal and sensitivity. This is particularly the case when they’ve been especially moved by the plight of another, or have had their own feelings hurt.

If you have found yourself journeying beside one with Dolphin as a primary Animal Totem, you may often wonder how one that can be so playful and joyous, can hours later, slip into such quiet contemplation. They will give a depth and breadth of love that is not always easy to understand for those who are accustomed to more casual relationships, but just when you think you’ve got them all figured out, prepare yourself for a surprise, and don’t ever mistake their incredible kindness for a weakness, as you may find yourself cast adrift on the ocean alone.

If Dolphin has chosen to accompany you on your Earthwalk, then you’re already aware of how blessed you truly are. As you study under the teachings and guidance of this wonderful Animal Totem Spirit Guide, you will be called upon to assist others, and to attain as much cosmic understanding and knowledge as you can absorb. Yet only through learning when it’s time to assist another who is in genuine need, and when the most compassionate thing to do is to let them find their own way, may you embrace the higher octaves of this simultaneously challenging and rewarding Medicine.

Although I have never personally worked with a dolphin spirit guide, I have been most fortunate to live near dolphins and been able to visit, observe, feed and touch dolphins at the San Diego and Orlando Sea World parks.  Their intelligence is not to be doubted, and their voices are exquisite symphonies of sound and song.  They are curious and friendly, and to touch one is to touch living velvet.  Watching them breathe through their blow holes is nothing short of amazing considering they  are mammals, not fish.  Although the dolphins I visit are either trained to exhibit their intelligence or are wild captives in large pools, they have always left me with a sense of serenity, joy and hope.

Plus they help disarm mines and cut anti-submarine nets across harbors. ;-)

The Navy also uses them to retrieve experiments that sink (I worked for the Department of the Navy, and I have first hand experience in R&D trials). Seals are very good at this, too. Thanks for stopping by, it’s been a long time!
