Witches Esbats 2008 (Northern Hemisphere, South Eastern America)
Unlike the eight sabbats, which are set aside for rituals of devotions to Gods, Goddesses and the mighty ones, esbats are witches’ circles created for the working of magic and healing. Whether doing a full moon esbat, a dark moon meditation, or a spell casting, one should know and understand the moon’s influences in each of its particular phases, which shall be the topic of a separate post some day.

Wow, Kat, I love your new layout for blogs. This is so interesting to me. I see that all moons are the same except the full moon. why is that and what does each full moon mean? Are these the moons at which time the circles are formed? You know I love this stuff and I will be back. Luv ya g/f. xoxo
Hi Barb
Thanks for the compliment; I design all the banners myself and just changed the layout to a dark one (it’s easier for me to read, so the change is rather a selfish one!). I’m so glad you stopped by.
The moon goes through the same phases each month, from no moon (i.e., dark or “new”), growing fuller (or “waxing”) until it looks like you can see half of the moon (which in reality is only a quarter of the moon), growing fuller still until it looks like you can see the whole moon (or the full moon, which in fact is really only half the moon; the other half you cannot see is the back half of the moon and is the dark or “new” moon whose face you’ll see in about 2 weeks). The moon then starts to shrink (or “wane”) until once again we see a quarter of the moon; it continues to shrink until there is no moon at all (we’ve reached the dark half of the moon once more).
I’m sure you’ve heard “once in a blue moon,” or “shine on harvest moon” before. Check out http://faeriekat.wordpress.com/2008/01/08/naming-the-full-moon/ to read about how full moons get their names.
Traditionally, sabbats are reserved for celebration and esbats are when magical work is performed (which requires the creation of a circle of protection). However, while magic is not generally performed during sabbats, the performance of magic is not limited to esbats. In fact, some magic is better performed on the new moon, a quarter moon, or even a certain day of the week or a certain time of the day. It all depends on the type of spell you are performing.
